Ontario Premier Doug Ford De-escalates Trade Dispute with U.S. President Trump

After a heated exchange of personal insults with President Trump on Monday—including telling Trump to "kiss my ass" and being called a "loser" in return—Ontario Premier Doug Ford struck a more conciliatory tone on Tuesday during U.S. media appearances. Speaking on CNN, Ford called for lowering the temperature and emphasized the need for a mutually beneficial trade deal. This shift comes amid escalating Canada-U.S. trade tensions, with Trump imposing 50% tariffs on Canadian exports and Canada announcing retaliatory measures including increased tariffs on American steel, aluminum, clothing, and other goods. Despite previously threatening to cut electricity and critical mineral supplies to U.S. states, Ford pivoted back to promoting his "Fortress North America" vision of cooperative trade between the two nations.
